I'm trying to put my front brakes back on. But when I'm trying to put the pads back in, they don't stay where they belong, and they fall together and I can't slide them over the rotor.

My Clymer manual says to take the cover off the master cylinder so I can push the piston in farther. Is that really necessary, or is there some other trick? And even then, what keeps the pads in place? The tabs fit into the little slots OK, but nothing seems to really keep them apart when you're not braking. What am I missing?

If you are going to continue to participate here please read the MEMBERS ANNOUNCEMENTS and comply with the requests .

Have you actually done the job yet or are you just preparing with some questions first. First time I did mine it wasn't as complicated as it looked in the parts diagram what holds the pads apart is pretty simple the disc holds them apart and the small spring clips keep them in place on a 535 front end.
They are a little different on the big Viragos using instead a set of pins as on mine .

GOOD JOB setting up your signature as you hang around more and see that there are differences between the different sizes and generations you'll quickly see why accurate info depends on knowing what bike we are talking about and the signature line is were we all look for it when trying to help

I was trying to put it back together yesterday, but they wouldn't stay in. I could see that each pad had two little tabs, and there are little slots for the tabs to fit into. But the pads didn't "snap" in or anything, so I'm wondering what I'm missing. I'm not sure what/where the spring clips are that should keep them in place.

Well, the clips are already in the main body of things, but they're not holding the pads in properly. Could the clips be "unsprung", and need, say, to be taken out and bent back a little?

I think I'm also missing that shim (piece #14). I can see it clearly in my head, but damned if I can remember where I put it. (Of course, if I order a new one, I'll find the old one the day after I get the new one.)

Hmmm ... but the Clymer manual picture doesn't show the shim. Interesting.

This is an exact 94 caliper sometimes the manuals use a representative bike or two ta cover all years and occasionally they just skip stuff like the fact removing the exhaust is part of a clutch job or the spacer inside the rear hub .

I always compare between Haynes, Clymer and OEM and always look at the micro fiche.

Got it! Read the Clymer more closely. I didn't clue in about leaving the caliper mounting bracket on the bike (I'd taken it off to replace the forks) and just removing that other bolt to swing the caliper away from the bracket. Putting the pads into the bracket from the outside (instead of from the inside, like I was trying) did the job.

Good work ! its been awhile since I did them I remember it looked tricky but went easy,, the manuals are a must have fer sure .
